Community leaders founded Family Stress Center in 1978.  Our mission is to strengthen families and to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect in Contra Costa County by providing counseling, educational and support services focusing on the essential needs of children and their families.  Our services are provided from our buildings in Concord and Antioch  and in donated space in schools, churches and community building throughout Contra Costa County.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders dedicated to strengthening families and preventing and treating child abuse.

 

Our Services:

Counseling Services
Family Stress Center's Counseling Program offers a goal-oriented, problem-solving approach to help families find realistic solutions to the daily problems that make life challenging. In addition to individual, child, and family therapy, FSC offers:
Anger Management Classes offer techniques to control anger with acceptable responses for difficult and frustrating events.
Child Abuse Treatment provides therapy to victims and families of child physical and sexual abuse including neglect.
Concord and Walnut Creek Youth and Family-  Concord and Walnut Creek residents may be eligible for free or reduced cost counseling based on family income.
Post Adoption Support Groups for families who have adopted in Contra Costa County and who want support in building strong, loving relationships while working with the special issues of adoption. Therapy group for adopted child and childcare for siblings.
SAMHWORKS – Behavioral health for adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues who are re-entering the workforce.
Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS) - Provides individualized one-to-one behavioral support and interventions for children and young adults up to age 21 with implementation of specific outcome oriented treatment plan
Victims of Crime may be eligible for Family Stress Center counseling services funded by the State of California Crime Victim Restitution Fund.
Education Services
Parent Education Classes teach basic parenting, communication and positive discipline skills by using the nationally acclaimed Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP®) curriculum.
Child Safety Program is a primary prevention program to empower young people ages 3 to 18 on how to recognize and deal with sexual, physical and emotional assault. Workshops are offered in local schools.
D.A.R.E. To Be You – 12 session Workshop for parents and their pre-school children to learn communication skills, discipline methods, responsible decision making and self esteem for self and child.

Parent Consultant Services

Child Protective Services’ Parent Aide Program provides support and supervised parental visits of children in foster care for families involved with Children’s Protective Services workers.

Child-Parent Enrichment Program provides resource linkage and counseling through in-home visits to families experiencing child-rearing problems.

Proud Fathers Program offers family support and job readiness training to fathers. Skilled staff help with employment opportunities, job training skills, custody/visitation and child support assistance, parenting classes, parenting skills to strengthen families, GED and Community College preparation.
Respite Mentor Program works one-on-one with seriously emotionally disturbed children and teens to enhance their positive development in interpersonal relationships, impulse control, skills and competencies.

Youth and Young Adult Program offers vocational and computer training, mentoring once enrolled in program, assistance with job preparation, resume, interviewing, and job search.

Bay Point First 5 Resource Center
Provides programs that promote the development of young children ages 0 to 5 in growing up healthy, learning and supported in safe, stimulating and nurturing families and communities. Click here to view Program Information.

Central County Receiving Center

The Central County Receiving Center provides basic physical and health care to children, infant to 17 years of age, during short-term emergency or urgent transition by county Child Protective Services workers.
East County Kinship Program

Provides services to enrich the lives of kinship caregivers and the children. Services include educational workshops for caregivers and youth, assistance in accessing services and obtaining guardianship, recreational outings and a homework club for youth.
